Kiwi Warren Gatland looks set for a formal role with the British & Irish Lions after being approached by experienced head coach Ian McGeechan who will oversee next year's tour of South Africa.

Gatland and his backroom staff of Rob Howley and Shaun Edwards have been mentioned as coaching contenders for the Lions for some time following Wales' grand slam last season.

Clearly they are hot property as McGeechan tries to find the right mix to take on the world champion Springboks.

Gatland told the BBC he had been sounded out by McGeechan and he was keen to get on board although there were formalities that needed to be completed.

"I've had a talk with Ian McGeechan, expressing an interest," Gatland told the BBC.

"The process after that is a formal approach from the Lions to the Welsh Rugby Union. I don't think they've done that yet.

"The first steps are under way in terms of the process but there's a few more before it's actually finalised.

"It's a great honour and I'd love to have that opportunity."

It's doubtful that the Welsh union will stand in his way although there could be some reservations after their previous experience in this area.

Fellow Kiwi Graham Henry was controversially appointed as the Lions head coach while he was coaching Wales in 2001. After losing the series 1-2 to Australia Henry also lost his way with Wales, eventually resigning to return to New Zealand where he is now in charge of the All Blacks.

"I know there's been a bit of criticism with Graham Henry in terms of his involvement," said Gatland.

"But I've spoken to Ian McGeechan and he said his involvement with the Lions while coaching Scotland was a real positive.

"It's a great opportunity to tour with one of the real icons of rugby in terms of the Lions and for me it would be a great highlight."
